And she is trying to keep herself together with him, but he carries on deceiving and two timing her and she has to stop. The first few lines, which refer to clothing size, see Rihanna imply that she has found the clothes of the woman that her boyfriend has been cheating on her with. The woman who has been seeing him, her clothes are size 10, but Rihanna is a different size, and this gives us the unknown side of Rihanna as a human lie detector. The remainder of the first verse describes how she will see if he’s going to feel sorry or apologize for what he has done, and she keeps the car running cause she knows deep down he’s not going to.
Then in the pre-chorus, Rihanna goes on to refer to Katy Perry. She and Rihanna are very good friends, but Katy was warning her not to make the big mistake of going out with this man, and eventually Rihanna second guesses that Katy was correct all along; that the person she was dating was two-sided, calculating and manipulative. The last few lines see her use an idiom that possibly refers to when she was attacked by Chris Brown back in 2009, 'Blood on your hands'. They both know what he did wrong, but he obviously isn't telling the truth. And that leaves her to question why he is showing a darker side.
In the chorus, Rihanna eventually realises she is in a sticky situation with him, and is being treated by this man as if she is naive. She loves him on the outside, but on the inside, she realises that she has been suffering physical, emotional, and mental abuse at his hands, and has to leave, before everything goes from bad to worse. She reinforces in the last couplet that she is no longer a naive person and may be slightly unable to speak up, but has mustered the inner courage to eventually put things right.
The second verse sees how her friends react when they see that she has nowhere to escape from this evil man. They call her an 'idiot' for not thinking clearly and putting up with his nonsense regardless. They try to convince her that she should leave before he takes it to the next level, but she refuses to listen. She thought she knew him, but after unearthing his nasty side, she was reeling quite badly.
The next pre-chorus tells that her new potential lover won't want to give it a go like she instantly did the last time. Next, her friends question her dumb behaviour for letting it go on and reinforcing her that he isn't the right person. The last bit of this pre-chorus explains likewise in the previous one, that he wouldn't be honest.
In the bridge, Rihanna explains that she is now trying to put the pieces back together, but her attempts fail every time he cheats or schemes. She reinforces the realisation of her stupidity for carrying on in a relationship that became damaged after his deceit came about. Next, she uses a very deep metaphor, 'The dunce cap is off', to explain that she is no longer stupid enough and that she is going to break up with him. Dunce caps are old-fashioned punishments for being stupid at school. Now he will eventually realise, after she has left, that as long as she is in the picture, they will no longer be happy together, because he kept manipulating, torturing and lying to her.
