Apart from Stings own comment of its origin and intent, the lyrics do tend to make for numuerous interpretations. Love is not one thst comes to my mind but rather the realization that true friendship is like a rare diamond - difficult to attain and sort after by many. We all would like to believe that there is someone who "would lay down" their life for us.

However, in reality we know the answer to the question

"Is there anyone out there who cares enough about me and will lay down their life for me?"

If you honestly search your mind, you would mostly likely conclude - probably not. When confronted with such a reality one begins to re-evaluate the true meaning of friendship and the love for one's self. Think about it... you would do anything to save your own life as opposed to others doing the same for you. "Hard to say it" but it is true.
